Halloween is a time for spooky fun that the whole family can get involved with. But, if you walk down the aisles of your local supermarket at this time of year, you’ll probably find that they’re packed with plastic Halloween decorations that have all been designed for single-use. With most of these ending up in the bin once Halloween is over and done with, we wanted to help you embrace the Halloween spirit whilst saving money, cutting down on waste, and being a little more mindful of the planet.
At Kit & Kin, we’re all about making sustainable choices, and celebrating Halloween with the family is no exception! So, whether you need Halloween party decorations or some fun Halloween crafts for kids, we’re sharing our favourite eco-friendly and sustainable ideas to help you celebrate spooky season - guilt-free!
Eco-friendly Halloween Decoration Ideas
-
Jam Jar Lanterns
If you have some empty jars in your recycling bin, give them a spooky makeover and re-use them as homemade Halloween lanterns. Simply paint the outside with non-toxic paint in your favourite Halloween designs - think pumpkins, ghosts, or bats. Add some LED tea lights, or pop some solar-powered Halloween candles inside, and you’ve got a glowing masterpiece. Bonus: these can be reused year after year, or recycled when you’re done!
-
Cardboard Cutouts
Got an old Kit & Kin cardboard box lying around? Cut it up into shapes like bats, pumpkins, or spooky cats. Paint them with eco-friendly, water-based paints and string them up around your house or garden. These are a great activity to do with kids, and once Halloween is over, you can recycle the cardboard.
-
Decorate Pumpkins
No Halloween party is complete without a bit of spooky pumpkin decor! Older kids will love helping you carve your pumpkin into classic scary faces, whilst younger children and babies can get creative by splattering them with non-toxic paint and biodegradable glitter. To cut down on food waste, you can roast the seeds as a tasty snack, or even make a hearty soup by scooping out the flesh before you decorate.
Psst… Did you know that a very scary 22 million pumpkins are thrown away every Halloween?! They end up in landfill where they produce methane, which is harmful to our planet. So, once Halloween is over, you can dispose of your pumpkin more mindfully by chopping it up and putting it on your compost heap, in your food waste bin, or even burying it in your garden to decompose naturally.
-
Leaf wreath
Kids will love getting involved in this one! Head out to your local park or woods on a dry day, and find the crunchiest, most colourful leaves you can. Once home, cut a circle out of an old box (your Kit & Kin subscription box works perfectly!), then cut another circle in the middle to make a ring. Then, get your little ones to stick their dried leaves onto the cardboard with non-toxic glue. Once your wreath is dry, use a bit of twine to hang it on your door or in your window.
-
Ghosts from Old Sheets
Have some old bedsheets you no longer use? Turn them into ghostly figures by draping them over balloons or foam balls and hanging them around your home or garden. You can even draw faces on them with a non-toxic marker to give them some personality.
-
Halloween Bunting
If you head to your local second-hand or charity shop, they’ll no doubt have plenty of pre-loved Halloween books, decorations and costumes on display. Get the kids to help you pick out a few spooky bits and pieces to get crafty with. Whether it’s pages from a ghost story book or an old fancy dress costume, carefully cut triangles out of your materials, get a long piece of twine, fold the bottom of each triangle over the string, then stick it down with non-toxic glue. Ta-dah - you have some horrifying homemade bunting to hang around your home!
Psst… Looking for a spook-tacular Halloween outfit for your little one? We all know that kids grow pretty fast, so they’ll likely only wear their costume once. Rather than buying brand-new, keep an eye out in second hand shops and on thrift websites to re-use and re-love those terrifying trick or treat outfits. You’ll save money whilst helping to cut down on clothing waste!
