Why we choose to produce locally, not globally

Why we choose to produce locally, not globally

Cutting the miles with local production is better for our planet and its people

Did you know that one-fifth of the world's carbon emissions comes from the manufacturing of products?

Whilst some of your favourite high street brands might claim to be eco-friendly, many ultimately choose to use production sites in the Far East and Asia. This might save a company money (and make your products cheaper), but the long journey they take before arriving in the UK does nothing to reduce carbon footprint.

Why is mileage bad?

Kit & Kin cutting carbon footprint

Manufacturing in the Far East is a surefire way to tick up those global miles, increasing a company’s carbon footprint due to the amount of transportation it takes for each product to eventually reach us.

Whether it’s by plane, boat or lorry, transporting products around the world uses up a lot of energy, and due to our reliance on fossil fuels  such as coal and oil, this releases harmful gases such as carbon dioxide into the Earth's atmosphere. Not only this, but shipping products around the world can contribute to noise pollution and road congestion.

What are the benefits of local production?

Producing using local manufacturing sites can have a really positive environmental impact. Not only does it go towards reducing carbon emissions, but it also cuts down on the human impact on the environment our products have. It can also have a positive effect on local economies and communities.

What’s our commitment when it comes to local production?

At Kit & Kin, we’re dedicated to minimising our carbon footprint, and a huge part of this is done by sourcing quality, ethical production sites that are within the UK & EU. Not only are they closer to home, but we make sure that these factories all share the same commitments to sustainability as we do.

We’re constantly working with our manufacturers to improve the eco credentials of our products’ production. Whether it’s replacing plastic packaging with paper or biodegradable packaging, we’re always looking for ways to be more sustainable.

All of our products are produced in the UK and EU

All of our products are produced in the UK and EU

To keep our mileage, and ultimately our carbon footprint, down, all of our products are made in either the UK or the EU, and we do it as sustainably as we can. Here’s how it breaks down for each of our products:

  • Nappies
Kit & Kin eco friendly nappies
Our nappies are produced in the EU, in a carbon neutral factory in the Czech Republic. Powered by 100% green energy, our nappy manufacturer has even won an award for pioneering an innovative eco-friendly railway which carries products all the way from the Czech Republic to the coast of Belgium for onward travel to the UK. By replacing 5,000 truck journeys across mainland Europe, they’ve cut their CO2 emissions by 3,000 tons a year!

  • Wipes
    Kit & Kin Wipes
We produce our wipes close to home in neighbouring France, cutting down the mileage it takes to get them from the factory to your door! We’ve chosen our manufacturers due to the fact they use renewable energy sources - in fact, they even produce their own energy through solar panel systems.

  • Refillable Cleaning
    Refillable Cleaning
We’re super-proud to be one of the few cleaning brands to produce our refillable range in the UK. The factory we use is powered by solar and green renewable energy, meaning we don’t use any fossil fuels to make our eco cleaning products.

  • Skincare
    Skincare for mums and babies
Our skincare for mums and babies is all produced in the UK, meaning it really does look after the planet as well as your little one’s sensitive skin!

  • Clothing
Kit & Kin organic cotton baby clothing
The impact fast fashion has on our planet is huge. Not only does it create a lot of pollution, but it also results in a lot of waste - not to mention the conditions of factories for the people who work there. This is why we’re particularly passionate about creating quality clothing that is gentle on delicate skin, and doesn’t negatively impact our planet.

Our baby clothing is produced in Turkey and Portugal, and everything we make adheres to GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). This covers the entire supply chain of organic textiles, from harvesting raw materials to environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing. It means that no harmful chemicals are used, workers' rights are protected and living wages met, and every single step of production meets strict sustainability criteria.
