Eco nappies or eco nappy pants?

Many parents often wonder when to switch from nappies to nappy pants. The truth is that this is completely down to your personal preference as a mum or dad, but we would love to help you figure out what those preferences are. So what is the difference between our eco nappies and our eco nappy pants?

Nappies have tabs on the side and open up completely. This is handy when you want to quickly change a wet nappy without taking off baby’s trousers and shoes, and it also means that the nappy is re-sealable.

Our eco nappy pants on the other hand have stretchy, tearaway sides. Simply pull them up like pants and take them off by tearing them open on the sides. They are useful for confidence building while potty training because they will allow your little one to pull down the nappy themselves and use the potty without any help from mum and dad. Additionally, parents of particularly wriggly, active babies often opt for nappy pants at a much younger age because they find them quick and easy to put on.

What are eco friendly nappies ?

Eco friendly nappies are nappies that aim to minimise their impact on the environment, through the materials used and/or the production processes. This includes reusable (or cloth) nappies, but the term generally refers to disposable nappies that are made with sustainable materials. At Kit and Kin, we create our eco nappies in a carbon neutral factory, and both the top sheet (the layer that pulls liquid away from baby's skin) and back sheet (the layer that stops liquid leaking out) of our nappies are made from plant-derived materials. This includes the absorbent core of our nappy, which contains totally chlorine-free, FSC® certified wood pulp from sustainably managed forests. We're also the only nappy brand that helps to protect our precious rainforest for the next generation. 🌳🙌

Do nappies biodegrade ?

Our nappies are made with sustainable materials. A much higher proportion than other eco nappies and of course a complete improvement compared to nappies made from petrochemicals. There is currently no biodegradable alternative for the velcro tabs and the elastics in the leg cuffs, but we are always looking for new materials as they become available. Biodegradability depends very much on landfill conditions and access to oxygen. We are in conversations with local councils, working towards a recycling option for used nappies.

How to dispose of eco nappies ?

Our hypoallergenic nappies are made with sustainable materials, so in order for them to break down as quickly as possible we would recommend following these simple steps:

Ensure the used nappy is placed inside a biodegradable nappy sack which will allow for oxygen to permeate
When disposing of the sack in the bin, if possible place it outside of the non-biodegradable bin liner (but still within the bin itself) as this will maximise the exposure to oxygen
