What is the umbilical cord stump?
Welcoming a new baby comes with lots of questions, and one common concern is caring for their umbilical cord stump.
In the first few weeks after birth, the stump will naturally dry, shrink, and fall off - usually within 5 to 15 days. During this time, keeping it clean, dry, and comfortable is key.
Here are 4 simple tips to help your baby’s belly button heal safely and comfortably, from choosing the right hypoallergenic nappy, to gentle newborn skincare.
Umbilical cord cleaning and hygiene
Wash your hands before touching the area and gently clean around the stump with plain water or a water-based wipe if it gets soiled. Carefully pat dry, and try to give the area some airflow where possible. It’s best to stick with sponge baths until the stump has completely healed, as soaking it in a full bath can slow the healing process.
Choosing the right nappy
What your baby wears also makes a difference. Nappies that press against the cord can rub and trap moisture, making the area sore. That’s why many parents choose nappies with an umbilical cord cut-out. Our Kit & Kin size 1 eco nappies are designed with this feature, keeping the stump exposed to air and free from friction, while also being hypoallergenic and gentle on your newborn’s skin.

Soothe sore skin
Whilst it’s best if your baby’s stump is kept dry, clean and free from any product, the skin around your baby’s tummy might need a little extra care. If any skin looks a little red or irritated, you can use a soothing balm to protect and calm the area. Our gentle, natural magic salve is perfect for easing soreness without harsh chemicals. Of course, if you notice signs of infection on your baby’s cord stump, such as spreading redness, swelling, pus, a strong smell, or if your baby seems unwell, it’s always best to check in with your doctor or midwife.

Let it heal naturally
With a little gentle care, most stumps heal quickly and fall away on their own, leaving your baby with a healthy, healed belly button.

FAQs

No - lukewarm plain water is usually all you need to clean the umbilical cord stump, unless your healthcare professional advises otherwise.
Can I use baby wipes on the cord stump area?

My baby’s skin around the stump looks a little red - what can I do?
Mild redness or irritation is normal, especially if the nappy rubs the area. Applying our gentle, natural Kit & Kin magic salve can help soothe and protect the skin without harsh chemicals. Just make sure the stump itself stays clean, dry and free from any product.
