Your guide to bathing your newborn safely, with gentle, non-toxic baby products
Bathing a newborn can feel overwhelming at first, but it’s also one of those special routines that helps you bond with your little one. With a bit of thoughtful prep, the right approach, and gentle, non-toxic baby bath time products, it’s a soothing routine that can even be fun for your little one.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to bathe your newborn, which baby skincare products to choose, and practical tips for keeping your baby’s delicate skin soft and healthy.

How often to bathe your newborn
Newborns don’t need a bath for the first 1-2 weeks of their lives - and it’s usually recommended that you wait until their umbilical stump has fallen off. After they’ve had their very first tub, they don’t need to be bathed daily, as their skin is delicate and still developing its natural protective layer. In fact, most babies do just fine with 2-3 baths per week. On the days in between, ‘top and tail’ their face and bottom with a soft, damp cloth (our plant-based reusable baby wipes are perfect!), or even a super-gentle hypoallergenic baby wipe is enough to keep them feeling fresh.
Preparing for baby’s first bath time
Before you start, get all of your baby bath time essentials close by, so it’s all within easy reach. You’ll need:
- A small baby bathtub or basin
- A bath thermometer
- Soft washcloths and towels
- A gentle non-toxic baby bath wash
- A cup or jug for rinsing
- A gentle balm or lotion for nappy rash and dry spots
- A snuggly towel - we love Avery Row’s adorable organic range
- Fresh clothes and a nappy
Using Certified Natural, fragrance-free and hypoallergenic products wherever you can will make sure your baby’s sensitive skin stays protected from harsh chemicals.

Step-by-step guide to your newborn’s first bath
1. Fill the bath
Start with a small baby bathtub filled with comfortably warm water, around 37-38°C. Always test with a bath time thermometer, or use your wrist or elbow to make sure it’s not too hot.
2. Undress and wrap
Keep your newborn wrapped in a soft towel until you’re ready to place them in the water, to stop them getting cold.
3. Support your baby
Place your baby into their bath, gently holding their head and neck with one hand, and supporting their bottom with the other.
4. Wash gently
Using a soft washcloth or sponge, apply a small amount of non-toxic baby bath wash and clean your baby starting from the face and moving downwards. Be especially gentle around sensitive areas, such as their umbilical cord stump.
5. Rinse thoroughly
Use a cup of warm water or your hand to rinse off all soap. Make sure there’s no residue left behind.
6. Lift and dry
Carefully lift your baby out of the bath and wrap them in a soft towel. Pat them dry, paying attention to skin folds.
7. Moisturise if needed
If your baby’s skin seems dry, apply a gentle, fragrance-free lotion or natural baby oil to keep it soft.

Choosing gentle, non-toxic baby bath products
Selecting the right bath products is key to protecting delicate newborn skin. Look for plant-based, fragrance-free baby skincare products that are free from sulfates, parabens, and phthalates. Hypoallergenic and dermatologist-tested formulas are ideal for babies with sensitive skin. Our helpful guide has a full breakdown of the products you need to care for your newborn’s skin.

Baby bath safety tips for newborns
Small precautions make a big difference, keeping bath time safe and enjoyable for everyone.
- Never leave your newborn unattended during bath time
- Keep the water warm, not hot. Around 37–38°C is perfect.
- Limit baths to 5–10 minutes
- Use non-slip mats in sinks or tubs to prevent accidents
- Keep all bath products within arm’s reach
Making bath time fun and soothing
Even at a young age, your baby will love interacting with you at bath time. Singing softly, talking to them, or introducing a soft bath toy once they’re a little older can help to keep them engaged and relaxed. Sticking to a consistent routine helps your baby anticipate bath time, creating a predictable, soothing environment - perfect for pre-bedtime!

Daily baths aren’t necessary for newborns. 2-3 times a week is more than enough, with gentle wipe downs between baths.

The ideal temperature is 37-38°C (98–100°F). Always test with your wrist or elbow.
