Clean home, clean oceans

Clean home, clean oceans

We’re committed to reducing plastic pollution

Did you know that an estimated 13 million tonnes of plastic waste enters our oceans every year? It’s a shocking statistic - and one we’re passionate about turning the tide on here at Kit & Kin.

We’re already committed to protecting our rainforests through our eco nappies, but we don’t want to stop there. So, when we launched our refillable non-toxic cleaning range last year, we wanted to do more to protect our planet for future generations. We’re on a mission to reduce the volume of plastic entering our water systems - 1 million bottles, to be exact - and every time you buy a product, you’re helping us achieve that.

How is plastic pollution affecting the ocean?Kit & Kin Plastic Pollution in Ocean

Plastic in our oceans can be catastrophic for wildlife and marine species. Fish and other creatures can mistake it for food or become entangled in it, whilst floating plastics can transport invasive species - potentially leading to biodiversity loss and species extinction.

Plastic also breaks down into tiny pieces called microplastics, which can be released into the food chain and seep carcinogenic chemicals into the soil. This can then run into rivers or groundwater, and even find its way into our drinking water.

Not only does this crisis pose a severe threat to marine life and ecosystems, but it also undermines economic stability in coastal and riverine communities worldwide due to possible disruptions in fish life and reproductive cycles.

Plastic pollution puts our precious coral reefs at risk

Kit & Kin Cutting Plastic Usage

The Mesoamerican Reef - an invaluable global heritage site off the Caribbean coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras - faces a dire threat from plastic waste coming from the area’s rivers.

The reef has suffered critical damage to its structure and marine biodiversity, threatening its ecological integrity, as well as the livelihoods of local communities dependent on the reef’s resources.

Guatemala is also a significant contributor to plastic waste in rivers, with the Rio Motagua identified as a major polluter. Studies have indicated that an overwhelming majority of the plastic waste entering the Caribbean from Guatemala comes from inadequate waste management, and illegal dumpsites along rivers.

What are we doing about it?

Kit & Kin Refillable Cleaning Range

We’re on a mission to cut down on plastic usage and clear pollution from our oceans - and every single Kit & Kin eco cleaning product you buy supports this. We’re doing this by working with trusted conservation charity, the World Land Trust, to significantly reduce the volume of plastic entering the Amatique Bay.

Over the next few years, with the support of the  WLT we’ll be aiming to remove 1 million plastic bottles from a huge network of river barriers and waste collectors. The project will make sure that at least 5 river barriers are fully functioning and under monitoring, to intercept and manage floating plastic in rivers, preventing pollution from reaching marine environments.

The project also has an outreach and educational campaign, aimed at reducing plastic pollution, and promoting recycling in local Guatemalan communities.

How else does our eco cleaning range make a difference?

Kit & Kin Eco Friendly Cleaning Products

Our bottles are refillable

Made from recycled plastic, our refillable cleaning bottles are designed to help you to cut down on your plastic waste. Buy one bottle, top up with our refill pouches, then send your empty pouches back to us for recycling.

Non toxic, plant-based materials

We only use naturally-derived ingredients in our eco cleaning products, meaning they’ll be kinder to your home, and our rivers and oceans.

Biodegradable, kinder to aquatic life

Our vegan cleaning products are also biodegradable, so when they get washed down your drain, you can be sure they won’t be harming aquatic wildlife.

Sustainability is not a trend for us

It’s a fundamental part of what we do, and why we exist. Our aim is, and always has been, to create products that protect your family, as well as the world our children will grow up in.

As a B Corp, protecting our planet is at the core of our brand, and it’s a value that’s been there from the very start - which is why we’re serious about doing everything we can to reduce plastic pollution in our oceans.
